Pre-Prophetic Cinema

A Call for a Cultural Revolution, for a New and Revolutionary Jewish Art, and for the Revival of a Modern Prophetic Israeli Culture

"The sprouts of prophecy are now growing, the sons of the prophets are awakening, the spirit of prophecy is hovering over the land, seeking a refuge."

- Rabbi Abraham Isaac Kook
Pre-Prophetic Cinema: A Manifesto for a New Cultural Revolution
Part I: The Call
At this moment, as the cultural boycott against Israel expands, we see not a crisis, but an opportunity—a moment of transition that calls for renewal and a great cultural revolution. This is a call for a new form of Jewish art. An art that is radical, prophetic, divine, daring, and revolutionary; an art that shatters conventional thinking and renews patterns of wisdom and consciousness. We seek to make Israel a global center for a pioneering, avant-garde culture that is at once Jewish-Israeli and universally human.
To revolt is to kick down a rotten door. A revolutionary culture must rebel against the foundational conventions of contemporary art to give birth to a new, groundbreaking creation. It is time to establish "illegal outposts" in the fields of creativity and to pave new paths toward the wondrous, the sublime, the soul, and the soul of souls.
Part II: The Vision - What is Pre-Prophetic Cinema?
Pre-Prophetic Cinema is a movement whose goal is to cultivate a new and revolutionary Israeli creation, drawing its vitality from the prophetic roots of Hebrew culture. We aim to establish a "New Israeli Wave," to transform Israel into a world center for pioneering and avant-garde creation, on the path toward the revival of a modern, prophetic Israeli culture.
This vision is inspired by the teachings of Rabbi Abraham Isaac Kook, who saw the development of imagination in contemporary art as a necessary step in preparing the vessels for the return of Hebrew prophecy. The idea was born from a thirst for unique sources of inspiration; a search for an art form that is both Israeli and universal, Jewish yet not sectarian, drawing from the treasures of Jewish thought while utilizing the most contemporary tools.
Prophecy is the heart of Judaism. It ceased 2,400 years ago but is destined to return. The remnants of this prophetic culture have been preserved in esoteric traditions (Torat HaSod), Midrash, and Aggadah. This is a hidden treasure from which a new artistic language can grow.

Pre-Prophetic Cinema stands in opposition to "mobilized art," to sectarian art, and to religious art in the narrow, diminishing sense of "Jewish folklore."
Part III: Core Principles of Creation
  • The Creating Soul: The source of this new creation is a revelation of the soul. We do not wait for an external muse; the "soul is always singing." The artist's task is to elevate themselves to meet their own soul and listen to its unending song. One who lives their soul-life exists in a constant state of direct creation.

  • Creative Intellect vs. Depicting Intellect: We distinguish between a "Depicting Intellect" (Sekhel Metzayer), which is limited to reflecting existing reality, and a "Creative Intellect" (Sekhel Yotzer), which emerges from the soul's will and partakes in the act of creation. Our goal is not to reflect the world, but to create new worlds; not to describe, but to redeem.

  • The Artist's Inner Work: The new creators will serve as the "chimney sweeps of the human imagination," clearing blockages in human consciousness so that art may once again open the channel between the divine and humanity. Creation begins not with expression, but with deep inner listening. It requires purification and intention before the pen (or the camera) is used.

  • Holy Chutzpah & Absolute Freedom: This creation demands a "holy audacity"—the spiritual courage to break established forms. Spiritual creation is free; it flows from the inner spirit, and the more it believes in itself, the higher it will ascend to the peaks of truth.

  • Creation Without Toil: Creation should not be thought of as a laborious effort. In the true moment of creation, the artist becomes like their Creator, who brought forth the world without toil. The process is not one of forceful effort, but of natural, flowing revelation.

Part IV: The Ultimate Aspiration - A New "Song of Songs"
Rabbi Kook speaks of four levels of song: the song of the self (personal), the song of the nation, the song of humanity (universal), and the song of the cosmos. Tragedy begins when these songs clash. Therefore, a fifth song is required—a "Song of Songs"—whose purpose is to unify all other songs into a sacred harmony. This is the highest aspiration of the new, pre-prophetic creation: to sing the "Song of Songs," to create a synthesis of all human culture.
Part V: About This Site - A Guided Tour
This website is designed as a space for exploration. To help you navigate, here is a brief guide to its main sections:
  • The Vision & Principles: The foundational text of the movement. Here you will find the core philosophy and the key principles guiding our creative work.
  • On the Project: A space for external, critical perspectives. It begins with an in-depth analysis generated by an AI, fostering a spirit of open dialogue and self-reflection.
  • The Blog: An ongoing journal of essays, stories, and analyses. This is where the core ideas are explored in depth, connecting them to cinema, art, and life.
  • The School of Prophets: The practical heart of the project. A curriculum of radical, imaginative exercises designed to awaken the creative soul and train the prophetic artist.
  • The Podcast ("A Call for a Cultural Revolution"): The auditory dimension of the project. Conversations and lectures that expand on the themes of the manifesto.
  • The Video Page: The visual gallery. A curated collection of short films, video-art, and visual experiments that embody the principles of Pre-Prophetic Cinema.

Part VI: A Call to Action
This is a call to all creators, religious and secular, men and women, heroes of spirit whose hearts have not been tainted by the poison of despair.
We call upon you to:
  • Establish artistic study houses (Batei Midrash): Create frameworks that combine the study of foundational texts with living artistic practice—film, music, poetry, and writing.
  • Create collaborations: Break the boundaries between disciplines. Connect artists, philosophers, musicians, and filmmakers to create new, multi-sensory content.
  • Use the newest tools: Embrace technologies like virtual reality and artificial intelligence to illustrate prophetic ideas and break the limits of the known.
But above all these practical actions, this is an inner summons.
Arise! Awaken! Refine your creative will, elevate it to the sublime, and connect it to the root of reality, to the living divine Will that animates all worlds. The great sea of the universal Will does not cancel the small, private will, but rather meets it, will meeting will, intellect meeting intellect, and everything unites to give life to the world as new worlds are endlessly born.
Listen to the discourse of the soul and the living will that beats within it. Make your voice heard—the original Israeli will.
Do not wait for permission. Create, dare, shatter the boundaries that chain the spirit. Our creation will not be a rebellion for rebellion's sake, but a new genesis. If the revolutionaries of the past discovered the subconscious, we are called to rediscover the power of the soul, the holiness hidden in reality, and the miracle concealed in the everyday.

For out of Zion shall go forth Torah, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.

About the Founder

The concept of Pre-Prophetic Cinema was originated by Sasha Netzach Agarunov. Born in Baku, Azerbaijan, to a Mountain Jew family , Agronov immigrated to Israel alone at the age of 17. He is a graduate of the Sam Spiegel Film School in Jerusalem and is an Ophir Award-winning actor (Israel's Academy Award, Best Actor 2009 for his role in "The Loners"). He has taught both cinema and Jewish thought. This project and website are the result of years-long search for a new cinematic and artistic language, one that is deeply rooted in Hebrew prophetic culture while engaging with the most contemporary forms of expression.
